''An Italian Night Out" Nella Pizzeria Napolitano
Traditional Neapolitan Pizza in ChicagoA new pizzeria has come to Chicago. “Nella Pizzeria Napolitano” is not just any pizzeria. It is a place you can go with family and friends to relax and enjoy a true Neapolitan pizza. The type of pizza that is made in a wood burning oven with fresh basil, fresh mozzarella and imported tomatoes. This is definitely not your typical Chicago-style pizza.
Over the last few years Chicago has had an influx of wood burning style pizzerias popping up all over the city, but none with the experience that Nella Grassano brings to the table. Nella, who is the former pizzaiola of “Spacca Napoli”, is a third generation pizza maker following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. Since the age of six she has been developing her skills in order to produce the best quality Neapolitan pizza you could imagine. Her passion shows from the quality of ingredients she uses to the type of oven that is needed to prepare these pizzas. The oven that is used was made brick by brick on the premises of “Nella Pizzeria Napolitano” by three artisan oven makers from Naples. The oven is made from tufu, which is a type of brick that is made from volcanic ash and sand. These types of attributes all contribute to the quality of the product she produces.
Nella and her husband Franco partnered up with restaurateur Scott Harris, from Mia Francesca restaurants, to bring us the type of pizza this city has been longing for. They are so confident of this restaurants success that the planning of a second restaurant, located at the old La Vita location (1359 West Taylor St.), is already in the works. The current “Nella Pizzeria Napolitano” is located at 2423 North Clark Street; 773-327-3400. Their menu will feature 23 pizzas plus specialty items like calzone and a Vesuvio pizza, which is rarely seen outside of Naples.
The beautifully designed restaurant has an open kitchen so you can view the pizzas being made which makes the atmosphere warm and inviting. The tables are spaced far enough apart so you don’t feel crowded while your enjoying your pizza. All of these details put together creates a new and exiting place for the whole family to enjoy. Whenever an Italian restaurant can produce the feeling of pride, passion and family, you know it will be a success. So my congratulations and thanks to Franco, Nella and Scott for bringing this wonderful place to Chicago. Best of Luck my friends, Phillip J. Speciale
