Breaded Steak Sandwich

Tender Steak

A breaded steak sandwich is an Italian feast on a roll. It originated on the Southside of Chicago and continues to be one of our favorite sandwiches. It is definitely right up there with our Chicago-Style Beef Sandwich and Deep Dish Pizza.

Thin slices of beef are simply breaded and deep fried, dipped into a marinara sauce, placed in a dinner roll. Then the steak is usually topped with mozzarella cheese, sweet peppers and/or hot or mild giardinaira. It is a flavorful sandwich that is very rich and fulfilling.

There is nothing refined about the Chicago-Style Breaded Steak Sandwich. It is gooey and messy but oh so delicious.


  • 4 flank steaks, sliced thin
  • Flour for dredging
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 1 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
  • 4 Tbs of fresh grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper
  • 4 Tbs of vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbs butter
  • Marinara sauce,heated
  • Italian dinner rolls
  • 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese, shredded


  • Dip the steaks in the flour then pound out thin. (about 1/4 inch)
  • In a wide container mix together the eggs and milk
  • In another dish, mix together the bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.
  • Heat the oil and butter in a large skillet.
  • Dip the steaks into the egg and then the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Fry the steaks in the oil and butter on both sides until golden brown.
  • Place the steaks on a paper towel covered plate to drain.
  • Dip the steaks in the hot marinara and place on the bread.
  • Top with shredded mozzarella,
  • Add sweet peppers and/or hot or mild giardinaira.
