OLD NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITE

Over forty years ago Connies Pizza opened in a small store front in my Bridgeport neighborhood on 26th Street. Today Connie's has many locations throughout the city, a fleet of delivery trucks and a thriving catering and frozen food division.

It seems like just yesterday I walked over to 26th Street to grab a slice of their delicious pizza. Now, the Connie’s on Archer Avenue is a huge warehouse like structure designed with Italian canned goods and antiques. The interior’s bare brick walls are filled with vintage posters and the sounds of Sinatra, Dean Martin and Louie Prima play throughout the restaurant.

The other day we took our son Joey over there for his tenth birthday and had a very nice time. We ate mozzarella wedges, fried zucchini, pizza, ribs and fried chicken. Yes, we had plenty of leftovers which I ate for my midnight snack. It wasn’t a good idea but a tasty one.

My son could live the rest of his life on mozzarella sticks and pizza and drives me crazy when it comes to eating any of my food. My daughter Alexa, on the other hand, eats like she’s the only one in the house. Needless to say I have no problem with her eating things I cook.

Anyway as far as Connie’s is concerned the pizza was by far better than anything else though the mozzarella and zucchini were excellent. It was a Wednesday evening and the place was full of families. There were large tables of people celebrating birthdays and just having a great time. It’s a nice casual place to take the kids for some delicious tasting pizza and will always be a family favorite.
